Ohrid

The Place...

Located on the largest freshwater lake in Europe, and ringed by mountains, Ohrid is unknown to most. And yet it is one of only 28 sites worldwide that is designated by UNESCO as both naturally and culturally unique. The medieval town is located on one of the oldest settlement sites in Europe and was selected by Phillip of Macedon II and then Tsar Samuel for their strategic fortresses. At one time, over  300 churches ringed the lake which became known as the Jerusalem of the Balkans. Many still exist today.

Bears, wolves and lynx still roam the mountains of Galicica National Park  just south of Ohrid while the lake itself hosts over 200 endemic species and is considered the most biologically diverse lake in the world. Numerous waterfowl overwinter here in internationally important wetlands visible from our facility.

However if you wish to get away, Ohrid is a well-placed hub to discover the region with Corfu, Thessaloniki, Sofia and Skopje all within ready driving distance. Inexpensive flights from Ohrid and Thessaloniki put the entire Mediterranean at your doorstep for ready weekend trips away.  North Macedonia uses the dinar, not the Euro, reducing your cost of living considerably. Stay at this aldeo and  you'll quickly understand why UNESCO rates Ohrid as 'superlative'.
